Popis / Abstract
Biobanks are key research infrastructures that connect patients with researchers. However, despite their increasing significance, a standardized methodology for evaluating their effectiveness and impact is lacking. This study proposes a framework for the continuous evaluation of systemic public research infrastructure for biobanking in Slovakia. The framework is structured around six key evaluation criteria – relevance, coherence, cost-effectiveness, efficiency, impact and sustainability – and is designed to address the needs of a wide range of stakeholders. The study systematically explores various methodological tools, including quality management tools, surveys, focus groups, case studies, as well as bibliometric and network analysis methods. Each method is examined with regard to its use in the evaluation of biobanking infrastructure and its role in addressing specific evaluation criteria. The study emphasizes the importance of quality management in biobanks, drawing on relevant standards and evaluation tools, such as self-assessment questionnaires and manuals from international organizations. Surveys, focus groups, and case studies help identify user needs, assess the effectiveness of biobank services, and uncover barriers in biobanking. Network analysis visualizes stakeholder relationships collaboration patterns, while bibliometric analysis provides insights into the biobank’s academic impact. By integrating these methods,the proposed evaluation framework offers a structured, adaptable, and evidence-based approach for assessing biobank performance. Furthermore, it provides a transferable model for the evaluation of other research infrastructures, supporting continuous improvement, strategic decision-making, and the long-term sustainability of research-practice ecosystems.
