Popis / Abstract
The worldwide coronavirus pandemic came suddenly in 2020 and caught the humanity unprepared. Even the most developed countries in the world could not manage the situation. At the beginning of April, the Government of the Slovak Republic adopted measures that put five Roma localities into a forced quarantine. The reason for isolation was the high concentration of infected people. The high number of infected people was caused by the migration of Slovak Roma permanently settled abroad (especially in the United Kingdom), by panic and chaotic regulations at the beginning of the pandemic. What were the reasons that led the Slovak Roma to leave United Kingdom? How did the Slovak government approach the issue? How did the state-ordered isolation take place in marginalized communities in the Eastern Slovakia Region? For five weeks, the Roma were forced to remain in the state-ordered isolation. Their locations were guarded by a military service. According to military estimates, up to 7 000 people lived in these isolated localities. The aim of the study is to analyse events during the global pandemic in isolated marginalized localities in the Eastern Slovakia. Furthermore, it aims to point out this atypical situation. At the same time, the article analyses the media discourse in public space and is supplemented by interviews within the field research.
