Highly skilled African migrants in Slovakia – recording of a PACES lecture

Our colleague Dr. Lucia Mýtna Kureková gave a seminar at the Institute for Research in Social Communication of the Slovak Academy of Sciences on how highly skilled migrants from African countries decide whether to stay in Slovakia, move on or return home.

The lecture presented findings from the EU-funded PACES project. Based on interviews with more than 30 migrants living, studying or working in Slovakia, the research reveals a paradox: even legal residence, high qualifications and social capital do not protect migrants from exclusion. They face barriers above all in accessing health care, housing and affordable language courses, and in the transition from study to work – and these experiences also shape their decision whether to stay. Lucia Kováčová and Dr. Jana Papcunová were also part of the research team.

The PACES project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101094279.
